Have you heard of HORIZON LINES?

If you’ve joined us for a portrait sculpture workshop, then yes, you will have heard about them! It’s when we start sculpting ‘freehand’ after completing the ‘comfort blanket’ system of the  RAPID SKETCH, where Andy takes you step-by-step through the essential measurements of the face, guiding you all the way until the basics are in place!

HORIZON LINES are viewed on each of the incremental photos of our model – and this is where it becomes challenging as you must only add clay (& sometimes shave a little off) to replicate the shape of the horizon line of, for example, the nose and cheek line of the model’s profile. Your observation and ability to note subtle shapes is key, plus working systematically through the left and right sides of the face alternately, so the features gradually come into focus equally – not one side of the face being finished and the other left as a facsimile of a ‘Terminator’! We reckon it takes at least 3 sessions scoping through each incremental photo until the likeness fully emerges.

This video was filmed live as Andy explains HORIZON LINES on day 3 of our Portrait Sculpture Workshop:
